The Government's recent Spending Review stated their intention to allocate £39bn over the next 10 years to build affordable and social housing plus an additional £10bn going to Homes England.
As Police & Crime Commissioner, I'm already working on a project called Prisoners Building Homes with Homes England, the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government and the Ministry of Justice.
Prisoners Building Homes is a pioneering, cross-government programme that delivers high quality, low cost, modular homes built by prisoners. It was the brain-child of Police & Crime Commissioners and I'm delighted to provide funding to support this programme in Sussex. It will provide affordable housing for our essential key workers as well as the homeless and, best of all, the company we are working with called Boutique Modern is also training and upskilling prisoners. We know from research that, if a prison-leaver has a job to go to, they are far less likely to re-offend...and this is good news for all of us!
